What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on taking an opponent to the ground, getting to a dominant position and forcing them to submit or “tap-out” by using various joint locks and choke holds. There is no punching, kicking or striking of any kind. The philosophy of BJJ is that a smaller, weaker person can dominate a bigger, stronger, un-trained person by using superior technique and leverage to manipulate the opponent’s movement.

Are beginners able to join in?
Absolutely! People of all skill and fitness levels are welcome at North Lakes BJJ and we encourage people to get started ASAP. Don’t worry about getting to a certain level of fitness before coming to class. BJJ will make you fit! If you have never trained BJJ before please drop us a quick message before you attend a trial class.

What should I wear?
Traditionally BJJ is trained in a specific uniform called a "Gi" or "Kimono." You do not require one to attend a trial class, basic gym clothes are fine, but don't wear anything expensive since they may get damaged. If you begin to train regularly a Gi will be required. Piercings and jewellery must be removed before training.

Are there BJJ competitions?
Yes, many. They are hosted all over the country and happen almost every weekend. If you’d like to get involved in competing, our coaches can guide you through the competition format, rules, scoring etc. and give you all the skills you require to be successful.
